We like to take time to introduce you to some of our Camp Unity residents as a way to connect you with the stories and people behind our organization. In this post, we are going to introduce you to Debbie.
Debbie’s hip and leg have caused her pain for quite some time. She was hired as a dishwasher at a local restaurant but the long hours of standing required by the job aggravated the pain.
Debbie didn’t qualify for health insurance from her employer and the pain got so bad that she couldn’t work. To save money she gave up her apartment.
For a few months she moved constantly between a day shelter and evening shelter. She had to leave the day shelter by 3:00 pm and could not return to the evening shelter before 8:30 pm.
She ended up roaming the streets and carrying her belongings everywhere she went. It was exhausting and her hip and leg hurt even more.
Debbie came to Camp Unity in the Fall of 2018 and it has made a huge difference in her life. Her tent provides a safe place to store things and the privacy that every person needs. She can rest when she needs to and it is quiet. She can take a hot shower, do laundry and get a hot meal when she would like to.
Debbie is working hard to find housing so she can have surgery for her hip and heal. She plans to return to work after surgery.
Our mission at Camp Unity is to help people like Debbie who need a safe place to stay and reestablish a path forward. Thank you to all of our supporters who have provided Debbie with a temporary place to call home!
